Antwort: | field marketing ~ face-to-face direct marketing (see handbook below) | #875574 |
Field Marketing consists of marketing activities focussed on a local market. | #875577 |

| » antworten |
This line came from the German translation of the Stephen King's "The Green Mile". We have a similar entry without 'verdammten' translated as 'I'll be jiggered!' [obs.] [archaic] (which also sounds like cowboy American to me) . I thought that the best translation taking into account 'verdammt' , would be "Well I'll be fucking damned!'" which is an uncouth expression of extreme amazement, but it's been deleted for a mismatch of register. |
Antwort: | My opinion | #875565 |
Da brat mir einer 'nen Storch = Well, I'll be damned The German expression is fading in terms of popularity. Adding “verdammt” to it sounds out of place for me. Maybe the translator had to adjust the tone? Translating cussing and cursing is hard. If you watched Eddie Murphy movies in the dubbed German version (if it couldn't be helped), you'd notice the excess “Scheiß-” and “verdammt” added. It didn't sound natural but somehow cool because it's American. My point is that the added “verdammt” could be the translator’s crutch to get the tone across and doesn't necessarily reflect proper use of the expression. |

Like any British term, it has probably been used by some Americans at some times. However, it is definitely not "cowboy American" as suggested earlier. |

I've managed to come close to the end of the book. However, there is still one tricky thing I am not quite sure how to translate into German. Some background info: Abe LIncoln leaves the cemetery, after his son has been buried: The original version reads as follows: +As President emerged from chapel I hightailed it out of guardhouse to unlock gate. The president went out saying nothing seeming distracted reached over gave my forearm warm squeeze then hooped upon the back of his little horse and I thought whole caboodle might go over on its side but no that little horsehero steeling himself clopped away quite dignifieds if he meant to protect Pres's reputation by acting as if Pres's feet were not nearly scraping the ground and I tell you, Tom, that noble nag might have been bearing Hercules or G. Der Sprecher spricht ein bißchen seltsam... |
Antwort: | A couple of comments: | #875558 |
the whole caboodle means the President and the horse. Bande makes me think of more people. go over on its side - fall over. He thought the President hopping onto the horse would make it fall over. steeling himself - like to brace oneself, the horse seemed to prepare itself for the rider getting on, so it didn't fall over. to protect Pres's reputation - your translation sounds to me as if the horse is protecting its own reputation, but I could be reading it wrong. for all the pride in his step - the horse was walking in such a proud way that he could have been carrying Hercules or GW. |

How can the scholar, who dwells away in the North West Territory or the Isle of Man, tell what is parliamentary in the kitchen? |
#875528 | ||
Antwort: | #875530 | |
I would understand it in the OED's sense 1c: "Of language: such as is permitted to be used, or is customarily used, in Parliament (cf. unparliamentary adj.). Formerly also, in extended use: admissible in polite conversation or discussion; civil, courteous." |
Antwort: | #875535 | |

Müsste es somit heissen: gouvernance of the others? ...from the others?
