Ich knüpfe hier an meine Frage #492823 an. Ich habe ein Buch übersetzt, das im Deutschen "Einfach gesunde Zähne" heißt. Mein Vorschlag, "Simply Healthy Teeth", wurde vom Autor verworfen, da er "simple" mit "einfältig, blöd" assoziiert. Ich habe ihm inzwischen eine Fülle anderer Vorschläge für den Buchtitel unterbreitet (siehe #492823), aber er möchte das Buch nach wie vor "Just Healthy Teeth" nennen. Er meint: "Hier würde ich mit dir dikutieren wollen - weil das "just" in dem Sinne wie Firma "Nike" es meint mir auch auf das zu passen scheint, was ich meine: einfach, genau, gerade, halt, schier, eben.." Er bezieht sich dabei auf die Werbeslogans von Nike, "Just sports" u.ä. Was meint ihr? | ||

The other Nike slogan "Just do it." is also limited to doing it - don't plan, don't think, don't worry - just do. The German then turns into "tue es einfach" and since that's a synonym for what your author is heading for you end up in trouble. It's the same thing as with Pizza Hut where the English "hut=Hütte" was changed to the German "Hut" (Engl. hat). A few brushstrokes and the hut in the English icon turned into a "German" sombrero. The picture works in both languages, but each party sees something different. If your author won't budge, maybe he can live with leaving out the "just". "Healthy Teeth" is a nice and simple title that can't be misread. If he wants to add something he can always add a subtitle. Healthy Teeth - pure and simple Healthy Teeth - just the thing you want (see we can smuggle in his favorite false friend :-) Healthy Teeth - just what the doctor ordered See if that might fly. | ||

I don't think your client understands that in this context, the word "just'' doesn't call up the same associations for an English-speaker than the word einfach would for a German speaker. The equivalent of "Just Healthy Teeth" would be Nur Gesunde Zähne, with one probable association "We only speak about healthy teeth here. The rest of you we don't care about." I think your client is mistaken about Nike using "Just Sports." To my knowledge, Nike doesn't. Nike uses "Just Do It," in which the "just" can be translated as einfach in the sense of tu's doch einfach. There are stores and dealers which use "Just Sports" as a name or tagline, But also here, the meaning is nur and not einfach. As to your "simply": it's right on the money. It's a time-honored advertising word used in combination with many complex and difficult endeavors. See the links below. To think that "simple" always implies einfältig shows a limited understanding of English. Last, I wonder if the publisher isn't going to pick the title anyway. In my experience, authors generally propose, but don't get to select a title. Publishers know the exact words which makes people pick up a book and look at it, and these words are often very different from what the author (or the translator) would ever even have considered.
