"but let our houses first be lined with beauty, where they come in contact with our lives, like the tenement of the shellfish, and not overlaid with it." What is the difference between "line" and "overlay"? |

my guess: "the tenement of the shellfish" = inside it´s lined beautifully with pearl. Deutsch: ausgekleidet. "overlay": outside = where they do not come in contact with our lives. Deutsch: (äußerlich) überdecken. |

Plant / install pleasant things in the surroundings, eg tree lined roads, but not things that smother the neighbourhood. |

Could include nice items inside the houses. The sentiment of this flowery rhetoric I perceive as pleasant things / lively surroundings v being smothered. |

http://www.literaturepage.com/read/walden-30.html In this excerpt, Thoreau contrasts the original functional dwellings of early settlers (cellars dug into the ground) with the grander dwellings built a few years later. He approves of the cellars. They were easy to build. Thus people could devote as much time as possible to finding food. Also, from the outside, they all looked pretty much the same, so they did not mark a distinction between the rich and poor. Thoreau notes that some years later, after agriculture had been established, people began to build elaborate and showy houses. He suggests that efforts to improve ones home should be focused on the interior (to line it with beauty) rather than the exterior (overlaying it with beauty). As always, with Thoreau, there is a deeper meaning, namely that one should expend one's effort on beautifying one's interior (becoming a better person) rather than on improving one's appearance. |
