blood moon [total lunar eclipse] » antworten

Linguee came up with one translation as "Blutmond."   Is that really a German expression or just a translator taking the literal route?

Thanks for the information, but last time I looked it said I was a professional myself.  That doesn't mean that I don't get stuck or know everything about everything.  Although I am quite capable at researching expressions, and have some limited experience on usage, due to an extended stay in Germany, only a native speaker can confirm whether a term is commonly used or not.  This forum offers a gateway to native professionals and other interested parties to achieve just that.
As a professional I'm often tasked with sprucing up, repairing and redoing translations generated by sites like the one you linked.  So, no offense, I ain't buyin'. :-)

sunfunlili's suggestion sounds good.
If you wanted to stick closer to "shuttle" you could try "Universitäts-Pendelbus" but I think that sounds very odd.

Many of our universities are private institutions and some of them have more money than others.  There is active competition, even among public universities, to attract students.  Amenities figure in students' choice of university.  So even smaller ones try to offer what they can.

charter school funding organization

von anonymous1, 2014-04-15, 03:14  like dislike  Spam?  72.82.10...
In the U.S., most Waldorf Schools are governed by a Board of Directors or Board of Trustees (responsible for legal and financial matters), a so-called College of Teachers (responsible for teaching matters) and the Administration. I assume that the Schulträgerverein is a reasonably close equivalent of the U.S. Waldorf school Board of Directors or Trustees.

"Charter Schools" in the U.S. are schools funded with public money ("the state"), but are not controlled by local school authorities. If Waldorf Schools are not funded with public money, anything with "charter school" could be misleading in my view. U.S. charter schools also tend to attract students from lower-income families, which may not be true for Waldorf schools.

Well, it depends on how you define "privately funded." A common definition is "50% or less publicly funded." So yes, there are some privately funded charter schools.

I think I'll better inquire with our local Waldorf school directly. My 10 y o daughter is a student there, but we are having school holidays right now. By the way, the school fee for the parents is only $90 per week, that's 60 euros, so I think that is actually affordable for most low-income families, too, and I guess the school might get government funds as well. I know they are a non-profit organisation, but still, the fees the parents pay probably would not be enough to run it and especially by far not high enough to pay the incredibly good and devoted teachers they have!

NB funding aside, the purpose of Charter Schools is primarily to avoid the worst tendencies of public schools run by bureaucratic school boards, who are universally despised (read what Mark Twain had to say about them). Such boards are usually dominated by Progressives under the thumb of teachers' unions and the Democrat Party, all of whom bitterly oppose Charters at every turn.

Opposition or not, they're actually quite successful. In New Orleans, 9 out of 20 students  attend charter schools, and other cities are looking closely at that. Those charter schools have greatly helped disadvantaged families to secure a better education for their kids. Not sure why the Democrats would oppose them. I suspect they generally don't and that you may be misinformed.
Dems and Charters in USA  #751688
von atemp (US), 2014-04-15, 18:50  like dislike  Spam?
It is common knowledge that Democrat candidates are overwhelmingly voted for by teachers' unions' memberships. Large portions of union dues are funneled wholesale to the campaigns of Dem candidates, who of course complete the quid pro quo arrangement by opposing charters. The severity of the problem varies state-to-state, but teachers' unions have historically been hostile to anything that they deem threatens their power and influence: homeschooling and charters are but two examples.
von callixte (US), Last modified: 2014-04-15, 19:01  like dislike  Spam?
Charter schools take applications.   Public schools accept everyone.   Charter schools, when they are faced with children they don't want, send them to public schools.   Thereafter, the administrators of charters schools compare their test scores, and claim they do a better job than their public school counterparts.

Charter schools represent the corporate madness that allows principals to earn very high salaries, teachers to be underpaid and the populace to be fooled into thinking they are getting a better education.  Hedgefund money, not teachers unions, is destroying the social fabric of American society.
