Frage: | I'm lost on the apparently double function of "von" in this sentence | » antworten |
From a sermon, 1888: "Oh, liebe Freunde, lasst euch nicht täuschen von dieser Welt Christentum und seinem Dichten und Trachten!" Here is my translation: Oh, dear friends, don't let yourselves be deceived by (von) this world | Christianity and its thoughts and plans! Or: Oh, dear friends, don't let yourselves be deceived | Christianity of (von) this world and its thoughts and plans! von seems to want to give an agent to the verb täuschen as well as connect dieser Welt to Christentum. Shouldn't it be written something like: "Oh, liebe Freunde, lasst euch nicht täuschen von dem Christentum (von) dieser Welt und seinem Dichten und Trachten!" Or is this redundant? |
Antwort: | #947809 | |

This is a common phenomenon in EN: Wikipedia(EN): Generic_trademark "Daft" here is a reflection of widespread linguistic practices. You find "daft" developments in every language. A "daft" linguistic phenomenon in German is the use of pseudo-anglicisms that take on new meanings in the target language, e.g., de-en.dict.cc: smoking. Antwort: | The ® symbol | #947815 |
The ® symbol – every time someone in this forum write “google [ ]”, are you saying they should add ®? Are you going to label all registered marks? In dict and in all your own texts? If your rhetorical answer is no, then what is your logic? Daft – when the copier is a Canon machine, only an idiot would use that phrase. |
Antwort: | #947816 | |
The use of the symbol is a different question. I personally don't like it, but its function is to show that the word is a trademark. It's not saying that you need to add the symbol each time you write the word. I guess that makes every English speaker who's ever used a trademark generically an idiot then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ |

Frage: | curly apostrophe, curly quotes, straight apostrophe, straight quotes | » antworten |
How do I distinguish between the different types of apostrophe and quotation marks in German? ( ’ “ ' " ) |
Antwort: | Die curlies sind nicht standard ASCII | #947786 |
Früher in sog.
Antwort: | #947787 | |
Thanks, Dracs. Sometimes I need to tell people in German what changes to make to texts in English, including which type of apostrophe they should use. What would be comprehensible for a native German speaker if I need to tell them either "change the straight apostrophe into a curly apostrophe" or "change the curly apostrophe into a straight apostrophe"? |
Antwort: | Das kommt darauf an, was dein Gegenüber weiß. | #947788 |
1. Kennt sie/er den Unterschied überhaupt? 2.

Antwort: | #947790 | |
It's not always clear who I'm leaving notes for. Some are likely to work in the typesetting industry, others may simply be office workers. But if I use (gebogene) typografische Anführungszeichen like you did above and (gebogener) typografischer Apostroph, then it sounds like I've got a good shot at them understanding. Thanks, Dracs. |
Chat: | #947791 | |
(Gänsefüßchen oben und Gänsefüßchen unten) Another fact is that the younger generation uses more and more emojis. Unicode also takes care of this. https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr51/tr51-25.html#Notation I wonder what the discussion with your customers would look like if you discuss emojis ... |
Antwort: | #947792 | |
Antwort: | #947793 | |
Thanks, Gerhard. Sadly, there seem to be quite a lot of ways of inserting the wrong sort of apostrophe or quotations marks into a file. And those sort of files are often exactly the sort that you can't use track changes to make your corrections in. |
Antwort: | #947799 | |
Thanks again, Dracs. I only just noticed your last reply. |
Antwort: | #947805 | |
Antwort: | #947812 | |
4;Rhodos, would that get me the sort of curly apostrophes/quotes we use in English (the sort I need to ask for) or the sort of French guillemets that appear in German novels (« ») or even the German quotation marks (Gänsefüßchen) that are backwards and partially at the wrong level from an English perspective („ “)? It sounds like that might work better for apostrophes than quotation marks. The longer this thread goes on for, the more I tealise what a difficult question this was because I'm asking for a German term to refer to something that only exists in English texts. Currently I'm definitely liking gerade for straight and I'm hoping that (gekrümmte) typographische will get me the curly ones I need. |

I think that it is still in use in British English - although I've also read a lot of Victorian novels, so it would be useful if another British English speaker could comment to agree or disagree with me. Collins doesn't label waken as archaic, but you can't always rely on doctionaries to do that. I did find this note in a definition of wake in Collins, but I'm not convinced it helps: 14. rare the state of being awake ▶ USAGE Where there is an object and the sense is the literal one wake (up) and waken are the commonest forms: I wakened him; I woke him (up). Frage: | wrestling mat | » antworten |
Hallo! The included mat cover makes our school sports mat a real wrestling mat. Available in single color or bicolor with combat circle." |

There are entries on Reddit from 2013 that use body count with this meaning: Google: "body count" reddit If we were to put it in the dict, it would need thorough disambiguation. Is there any similar phrase that would work in German or is it simply a term that would need rephrasing in a translation (with an explanation in square brackets instead of a translation if it were to be added to the dict)? |

I agree that the entry is not ideal. However, to me, "Whatever next?", like "What next?", is a question -- not an exclamation. I would translate "Das auch noch!" as "Not that too!". (There is already a translation as "Not that as well.") |
Antwort: | #947753 | |
I found several examples of whatever next in use in a dictionary: https://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/Whatever+next! Whatever next? An expression of surprise, astonishment, or annoyance about a situation and how it may worsen or intensify in the future. Aunt Janet is here early too? Oh, whatever next? I still need another hour to cook! Players were paid to cheat in the Olympics? Wow, whatever next? If they cancel that long-running soap opera, whatever next? No show is safe. Could Das auch noch! translate any of them well? I'm not against having a question translate a statement or vice versa if they would be used in the same circumstances. The problem is that I'm not yet fully convinced the translation works. It seems most plausible to me in the example with Aunt Janet, but even there I'm yet to be convinced they both mean the same thing. |
Chat: | #947754 | |
Windfall, in your examples I'd probably say something like "das fehlt(e) gerade noch" or something similar. |
Antwort: | #947757 | |
4;Uffie1, I don’t think that entry (with either What next? or Whatever next?) is OK unless we can find at least one (but ideally several) sentences where the translation works. |

Wieso verwechselt?

Antwort: | Code Analytiker / Code Analyst ? | #947736 |
Antwort: | #947737 | |
