Yes, but the scheme is identical. The button counting scheme isn't well-known by English-speakers, so the translation has to use an equivalent, or explain the button thing. I have to add that because of the punctuation and the position of the word "Lotterie" in this Karl Popper quote, I don't think the button counting refers to lotteries. A little more context:

... ein anderes "klassisches" Beispiel für abergläubiges Setzungsbedürfnis; hierher gehören unzählige Gebräuche: "An den Knöpfen abzählen," die bekannte "Vor-Ziehung" von "Glückslosen" der Lotterie, überhaupt die meisten Lotterieregeln. All diese Formen des Aberglaubens laufen darauf hinaus, das Schicksal als "gesetzt" anzunehmen und die unbekannte Setzung des Schicksals durch eine andere (des Zufalls) zu ersetzen, an diese dann zu glauben.
