Frage: | Wuffke: "get off on" | |
Since you're down under, I address this question to you. Do you know the film "Jindabyne"? Some men go fishing and find a corps but don't head back straight away. The attach the corps and only later report it to the police. Their behaviour causes a scandal. Talking about these men, somebody says: "Then again, maybe they just got off on the whole thing." How would you translate that? Is "Vielleicht verloren sie einfach die Nerven." wrong? The French says: "Ils ont peut-être perdu la tête." |

Antwort: | Shortcuts! | #206338 |
I think I have that in my collection. |
Antwort: | Wuffke - that doesn't surprise me at all. | #206342 |
Piecing a non-discursive impression together from diverse strings... I would guess you have more than one Altman in your collection. And probably the one or other Tarantino. Michael |
Antwort: | Dear Clavichord and Wuffke. | #206343 |
In that case we share the same taste in films. Altman, Tarantino ... brilliant! I guess you also like Guy Ritchie or Jarmusch. BUT Jindabyne is not Shortcuts!!!!! It is a film by Ray Lawrence, starring Gabriel Byrne. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382765/ |
Antwort: | in fact I do. | #206345 |
It took me a while to recall the Altman movie - I thought first of an Australian production... I just hope it's on DVD... |
Antwort: | but the episode with the anglers and the corpse is definitively "Shortcuts". | #206347 |

but there are obviously 2 movies using the same scenario. I'll try to find Jindabyne in the video shop, I definitely don't know that movie. |
Antwort: | got it. | #206351 |
Altman based the entire movie on short stories by Raymond Carver. Jindabyne uses just one of them. Originaltitel: Short Cuts - Regie: Robert Altman - DrehbBuch: Robert Altman und Frank Barhydt, nach Kurzgeschichten und Erzählungen von Raymond Carver - Kamera: Walt Lloyd - Schnitt: Suzy Elmiger - Musik: Mark Isham und Gavin Friday - Darsteller - 1993; Michael |

;-) have you never heard the expression before?!! |
Antwort: | That explains everything! | #206353 |
Jindabyne is also based on the book by Raymond Carver. I must admit, I have seen Shortcurts but I don't remember that episode. |
Antwort: | CC99 re 'what's having an organism' | #206354 |
Good spot. I meant of course 'an orgasm' :-) |
Antwort: | back to the translation - to get off in the context of several men alone in the wilderness has a sexual meaning imo. | #206355 |
"Es erregte sie" would be a PC translation. There are more possibilities. M |
Antwort: | zweiter Sieger....:( | #206356 |
