Frage: | Ich zählte in Gedanken mein Geld. | |
How can I express this in a nice English? Oddly enough all dictionaries fail despite it is a very common thing to do, and it happens every day. |

I think "I was counting my money on my mind." is better than"in my head". No offense. |

Hmmm. With regard to computation, "in my head" is the exact opposite of "on paper." With regard to cogitation, "on my mind" conveys a sense of involuntary preoccupation with a topic, which would certainly apply to our poor young man. However, your sentence sounds very wrong, because it confuses the transitive and the intransitive. It would have to be something like: "My shortage of funds was on my mind." To make this more active, "My shortage of funds was constantly on my mind." But it is still too weak for describing a pressing situation. My colloqial suggestion: "I couldn't stop myself secretly totting up my finances." |
