First of all I‘d like to show you a photo. I think you know the leaders of this family….

Today I would like to talk about the monarchy since 1990. However, before I start, a few general words about monarchy.

The British monarch or sovereign is the head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Up to the end of the Middle Ages the British monarchs ruled autocratically. As time went by, their power was restricted, first by the nobility, afterwards increasingly by parliament, thus becoming more and more democratic. From 1603 the Scottish monarch ruled England in personal union. In 1707, the parliaments of England and Scotland passed the Act of Union which united both countries into the Kingdom of Great Britain. When Ireland was added in 1800, the new whole was called United Kingdom. Government under a system of constitutional monarchy has been uninterrupted since the end of the Glorious Revolution in 1689.

The acting monarch is the Queen Elisabeth II, who rules since the 6th February, 1952. Besides, she is head of the Commonwealth of Nations and head of state of fifteen other states. In addition, the ?Kronbesitztümer? (habe keine Übersetzung gefunden) are subordinate to her directly, she is formally also head of the Church of England. The crown prince is her oldest son Charles, Prince of Wales, the spouse of the Queen is prince Philip, Herzog of Edinburgh. In addition she has 3 other children Andrew, Duke of  York,  Edward, Earl von Wessex and Anne, Princess Royal. A few brief remarks on  the most famous family members. Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten or Duke of Cornwall, mostly short “Prince”, he will be the next heir to the throne. He is most famous for his marriage to Diana Spencer. With Diana, he has two sons William and Harry. They are the second and third heir to the throne. I'll talk about Diana , I‘d like to say something later.
His sons are often in the yellow [press. William is, for example, currently in the headlines with his girlfriend Kate Middleton .

Over the years, Charles was said to be liaised with a number of women, but not all of them were serious candidates as a wife of the heir to the throne. In July 1981, under the eyes of a global TV audience in Saint Paul's Cathedral in London, he was married to Lady Diana Spencer. In December 1992,  the marriage crumbled, as Charles committed adultery with Lady Camilla Parker Bowles.
Five years later, the "queen of hearts" died in a traffic accident in a road tunnel in Paris. The death of Diana shocked the world and the reputation of the monarchy shrank. There were even rumours about a conspiracy to murder planned by the British family.
The death of Diana brought the British family nearer to the people. (Der Tod von Diana hat die britische Familie näher an das Volk herangebracht) This event made evident that the royal house is vulnerable and human.

Today, the UK monarchy's has a higher degree of popularity (Heute besitzt die britische Monarchie mehr Popularität) than before 20 or 30 years. This is mainly due to the fresh wind of the royal house. (Das liegt hauptsächlich am frischen Wind im königlichen Haus) Young members such as Prince William or Prince Harry, make the UK monarchy for the young audience particularly interesting. Also, the Queen always gains positive attention for example by inviting young music groups in the Buckingham Palace and tries to get to whom.

The acting monarch is Queen Elisabeth II who has ruled since the 6th of February, 1952. Besides, she is head of the Commonwealth of Nations and head of state of fifteen other states. Personally, she owns private property such as Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House or major art collections. She also formally heads the Church of England. The crown prince is her eldest son Charles, Prince of Wales, the Queen's spouse is Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Her three other children are Anne, the Princess Royal;  Andrew, Duke of York; and Edward, Earl of Wessex.
A few brief remarks on the best known family members. Charles Philip Arthur George Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall (styled His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, except in Scotland, where he is styled His Royal Highness The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay) is Heir Apparent, equally and separately, to the thrones of 16 sovereign states known as the Commonwealth Realms. He is notorious for his marriage to Lady Diana Spencer. With Diana as Princess of Wales, he has two sons, William and Harry. They are second and third in line to the throne. I would like to say something about Diana later. His sons figure often in the yellow press. William, for example, currently hits the headlines with his girlfriend Kate Middleton. Harry seems to have a major drinking problem.

Over the years, Charles was said to be having relationships with a number of women, but few of them were serious candidates to marry the heir to the throne. In July 1981, watched by a global TV audience, he was married to Lady Diana Spencer in Saint Paul's Cathedral, London. In December 1992,  the marriage collapsed, as Charles had committed adultery with Mrs Camilla Parker-Bowles and Diana whad gone her separate ways as well.
Five years later, the "queen of hearts" suffered a fatal traffic accident in a road tunnel in Paris. Diana's death shocked many and the reputation of the monarchy declined. There were even rumours about a conspiracy by the Royal Family to have her murdered. On the other hand, her demise brought the Queen and the Royals as well as the British people closer together.  This event made it obvious that the royal family are of course vulnerable and all too human.

Today, the monarchy seems to be more popular than it was 20 or 30 years ago. This is mainly due to the fresh faces among the Royals. Young members, such as Prince William or Prince Harry, make the UK monarchy particularly interesting for the younger audience. Also, the Queen herself gains positive attention at public functions and by inviting, for example, young music groups to Buckingham Palace and trying to get on with them.

"Charles and Diana went their separate wayS", because they each had a way, but Diana could only go her separate "way" or, even better, her "own way"
