Frage: | gibt es nicht die Möglichkeit, irgendwas mit "to put down" | |
zu machen, wenn man sagen will, daß sich jemand standhaft weigert, etwas zu tun? |
Antwort: | There's 'to put one's foot down' | #343977 |
meaning 'to take a stand' on some issue. "Angie is always inviting herself to stay with us—I wish for once you would put your foot down and tell her no!" |
Antwort: | Errr... no, that's not what I meant. | #343979 |
I thought it was possible to say summfinck like "he usually puts down philologists' parties because he doesn't like their jokes". |
Antwort: | Sure, you can say that. | #343980 |
But the 'put down' in that sentence only means to make unkind remarks about it. The refusal to go to those parties is only implied, and not certain at all. |
Antwort: | But that's it, thank you! | #343983 |
Could somebody find a good German translation for that and put it in the dictionary? I would appreciate that! |
Antwort: | put down = run down ? | #343986 |
Antwort: | turns his nose UP at? | #343991 |
Antwort: | Yes, I think 'to run down sth.' means pretty much the same thing, | #343994 |
but I think it implies repeated bad-mouthing. 'Put-down' can also be used as noun, as in "Holey moley, what a put-down! He'll never be invited again." At the veterinary, ' to put down' means "einschläfern." |
Antwort: | GOT IT!!! turns down!!!! weigern....refuses, rejects!!! | #343995 |
