Frage:
Listenpreis in der Autoindustrie
von linguatrix (DE/HK), 2009-01-23, 13:15  Spam?
It that a catalogue price or is there another term?
Antwort:
In Germany, there are more or less official lists with prices for used cars.  #397612
von Baccalaureus (DE), 2009-01-23, 13:25  Spam?
So, if you want to buy, e.g., a 95er Ford Fiesta, you have a look in that list to find out how much the vendor can charge for it (a crap, in this case). The list also gives the amount that insurance pays for the car in case of damage.
Antwort:
Was Bacca meint, heißt Schwacke-Liste.  #397618
von Lucie (DE), 2009-01-23, 13:40  Spam?
Wikipedia(DE): Schwacke-Liste
Aber in deinem Fall dürfte wohl eher die offizielle Preisliste der Autohersteller gemeint sein, oder?
Antwort:
With new cars in the U.S.: Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Colloquial: 'sticker price.'  #397620

Allows the car dealer to set the actual sales price according to demand. 'Listenpreis' can also refer to a 'fixed price,' but I don't think that could apply to the automobile industry.

In essence it is the SRP for end consumers including VAT.

Oddly enough, it's swing doors in the UK and swinging doors in the US

Note: U.S. MSRP does not include tax.  #397648
von mwk, 2009-01-23, 14:47  Spam?  72.82.98....
There's no VAT in the U.S. Taxes are charged by the state, county and/or municipality. So U.S. MSRP is not the exact equivalent of 'Listenpreis.'

Incidentally, for the UK one single google hit for recommended retail price and zilch for suggested retail price  #397649

Proteus: perhaps 'retail' is the stumbling block.  #397657
von mwk, 2009-01-23, 15:19  Spam?  72.82.98....
The UK prices might all be 'ex works.' In the U.S., the dealers actually buy the cars from the manufacturers and put the cars they now "own" on their huge car lots. ('Own' here in quotation marks because almost all dealers borrow the money with which to purchase those cars from the manufacturer—a strange scheme, indeed.)

clarification: GM dealers borrow money from GM with which to buy GM cars.  #397658

not my day today, too muddle-headed: 'GM' is an example. Other dealer borrow $ as well.  #397660

I only dealt with usage, mwk. While the American terms are perfectly justified, they would not be found this side of the Atlantic.  #397661
