Thanks for the prompt answers.
I _do_ know both the book and the film, _that_ is why I would be interested whether this expression has some 'extra' meaning in English...

Tall mountains are sometimes said to touch the void of heaven ; one can touch the void when close to death; moving to a higher spiritual plane could be called touching the void .

The literal meaning of “touching the void” is easy.  Touching  is berührend, anfassend, anrührend.   Void is die Leere.  However, the figurative meaning of the expression “touching the void” is difficult to express, because the meaning of the word “void” often changes with the context.

There are many expressions in English describing an encounter with the “void:” peering into the void, falling into the void, reaching into the void, leaping into the void.  All can be found in great number by googling.  In each case the application of the word “void” to the particular situation is different.  Void can mean anything from despair and confusion to something more concrete, such as homelessness.  You will have to watch the movie, or read the book “Touching the Void” to know the particular problem the individual is encountering.

“Touching” suggests that the individual has reached a point in his life where he is on the edge of  . . . confusion, despair, or heaven, as suggested by mwk.

Thanks for your help.
Knowing the book (did I mentioned that I had read it? :)) 'close to death' could be a reasonable meaning in this particular case, I think.
The French title 'La Mort suspendue' may also refer to this interpretation...
Thanks again.
Anyway, Martin, in terms of the literal meaning (and from grammatical point of view) I would translate it into 'die Leere berühren' as opposed to 'berührende Leere'. Or did I misinterpret something?
