Frage:
by/with an example
von Peter, 2010-04-12, 20:10  like dislike  Spam?  88.78....
Good evening! I have a question concerning style/grammer usage: do you say "by an example" or "with an example"? "Let me clarify this by an example" or "Let me clarify this with an example"? Can I use both? Are there differences in usage (when do I use what)? Thanks for your help.

Google translate, limited to English and a wild card is one of your best friends. ;) I used the wild card in place of clarify since people also use explain, illustrate etc.
Google: "* this with an example"
Google: "* this by an example"

"through an example" is also possible

definitely not 'let me clarify this by an example'

- you generally also wouldn't use through an example - unless maybe saying something like 'through the use of an example, it was shown...' - highly formal

Here would be your best options:

-let me explain,  by giving an example
-let my clarify this (point) with an example
-to give an example...

The word fire only comes up with 47 pages, so I don't know what you're getting all bent out of shape about.
As for my previous comments, google books also supports it:
Google: "fire" books gives 22,000 book entries,
Google: "* this with an example"
and about the same for
Google: "* this by an example"
Since you've been known to use google hits of less than 5 links, much less 5 pages to verify some of your suggestions, you're not in a position to criticize.
