Thanks very much for that, but the remark about losing the whole day should have been in brackets! The term Orientierungssatz is proving as elusive as the Scarlet Pimpernel, and that's what I really need help with. Sorry for not being clear!

a Orientierungssatz is a special kind of Leitsatz - und mal wieder juristisches Vokabular. Leitsatz would be headnote...but I don't think that's very helpful....

I know it's all to do with summaries of various kinds. The context is a legal commentary and there usually seems to be a Leitsatz and an Orientierungssatz. Based on a previous post Leitsatz is summary (editor's, commentator's etc.). The problem is that there must be a specific English rendering of this, which means something like "summary for guidance purposes", but doesnt necessarily contain any of those words.

I hope someone has an inkling at least of where to look.

"Leitsatz" seems to be something different:

The thing is that the "headnote" or the "reporter's syllabus" is a longish and often rambling summary in which a Leitsatz and/or an Orientierungssatz is buried somewhere, so it's as close as I can come. One should coin good equivalents for these statements and get people to use it... :-)

In the USA West, the de facto official legal publisher, calls it "key word," a way to find relevant head notes.
