Ich verstehe dieses Gedicht hier nicht! Kann mir bitte jemand helfen es zu übersetzen. Danke schon mal!

When we arrived, we were expelled
like fetuses
from the warm belly of an airplane.
Shocked by the cold,
we held hands as we skidded
like new colts on the unfamiliar ice.
We waited winter in a room sealed
by our strangeness.
Watching the shifting tale of the streets,
our urge to fly toward the sun
etched in nailprints like tiny wings
in the grey plaster of the windowsill,
we hoped all the while
that lost in the city's monochrome
there were colors we couldn't
yet see

This poem is about Puerto Ricans arriving in the US (New Jersey)
The plane was like a mother's womb and when we arrived it was like being born (pushed out of the birth canal.) We held hands as we skidded on the ice outside the plane. We felt like new born horses (colts). We spent the winter in a room that was sealed (closed) by our strangeness. We watched the changing stories on the streets. We scratched at the window sill because we wanted to be free (fly towards the sun)
Our scratches looked like etchings (drawings). The city (from where were were looking) appeared to be one color (probably gray). We hoped that there were other colors in the city that we hadn't seen yet.
I like cybelle's explanation,  #519454

but I would just say that monochrome (although the original Greek means one colour) also means black and white (and shades of grey) - - which I think is more likely here.
