Frage:
Mening Unclear to me
von Dannita, 2010-08-07, 05:28  like dislike  Spam?  190.42.66...
Imagine that in the middle of a dessert suddenly appears some kind of mounstrous bear. Around the bear appears a whirpool and the narrator says. "In meinen verschwimmenden Pupillen spiegelte sich ein grosser bär, der im Zentrum des Strudels die Arme hoch und runter riss." I think the narrator is saying the bear is making the whirpool by tearing with his arms the sand, but I'm told that what the narrator means is that the bear was just standing in the middle of the whirlpool tearing the 'air' moving its arms up and down. It's not very clear what's the bear doing.  Could you help?

You are trying to use the wrong meaning for "reissen".
Move sth. abruptly and rapidly is the meaning here.

You were thinking of the second meaning.

The bear is swimming in the whirlpool of sand, moving his arms up and down/waving his arms around and crying for help.  #534655

but the rest is fine (the bear is probably standing or sitting in the pool and waving his arms up and down with powerful joy).

Romy:My guess: it's not a whirlpool bath but a whirlpool, a vortex of sand only (Strudel),  #534675

the-wrecker: but you could be right, too, that it is deadly quicksand, and not a lovely fata morgana with a refreshing water pool   #534686

Dann steckt die Bärenerscheinung vielleicht in einem Vanillepudding. In Verbinding mit dem Genuss gewisser Drogen seitens des Betrachters kann man sich das schon vorstellen.  :-))

Thank you very much. To answer all the people trying to help me I have to say sorry for writing dessert instead of desert - 'Würde' was the word in german, and that it was also some kind of vortex in the sand. It is correct I was not using the right meaning of reissen. (And the bear would have been much happier in vanilla custard, I think)
