What is the sense of "He was told he should have + 3rd form"? Thanks a lot!
von Küsschen!, 2011-02-02, 09:11  like dislike  Spam?  212.5.20...
a)  While he maintained he risk-assessed the activity before it began, he was told he should have done it in writing.

b) He was told he should have been there by 9 a. m.

c) ....he was told he should have been in the hospital a week

d) he was told he should have gone to the captain for information
By 3rd form, do you mean past participle?  #574802

2. Past participles are also used to make one of the
past forms for the modal verbs (modal auxiliaries).
These forms use a modal + have + the past participle.

could have gone
may have been
should have known
might have seen
would have written
must have forgotten

Thanks, but does it mean "It would have been desirable if he had + past participle"?

von wandle (GB), 2011-02-02, 09:30  like dislike  Spam?
It means he ought to have done so.
This means either that he had a duty to do it (moral obligation), or that he would have benefited from doing it.

Well, can you paraphrase it by saying "He would have been required to/would have had/needed to"?

If you leave out 'he was told' (man sagte ihm) you alter the sense.
Each of your initial examples (09:11) is clearly and correctly expressed.
Instead of 'should have' you could say 'ought to have', which, like 'should have', carries the two meanings pointed out above.  Other substitutions may well force you to choose one or other of those meanings.

Is it possible to say: "He was told that he would have been required/obliged to/would have had to/would have needed to/should have had/needed to"?

Too many options and not enough context for your meaning to be clear.
