Tagebuch

Does Tagebuch mean journal in the way that Americans use it, as in someplace where they would do "journaling"?

A standard German "Tagebuch" would be more of a diary.  (The kind teenage girls are keeping under locks.)  But if you are talking "Reisetagebuch" then it can be like a journal.

I'd get upset if someone read my diary.  A journal you'll write so others or your children/grandchildren can read it.

Wikipedia(EN): Diary
Note:"Generally the term is today employed for personal diaries, normally intended to remain private or to have a limited circulation amongst friends or relatives" ..."it is generally written not with the intention of being published as it stands, but for the author's own use."

Journal vs. Diary  #626530

Diary has more of the sense--generally and in the US--of something private.  Whereas a journal might be something shared or done for a class, so it combines the personal with the potentially public.

Many teachers assign "journals" in writing classes and other classes for students to record their experience of the class, the texts, etc.

Would Reisetagebuch be something one took on a trip to record one's impressions?

nowadays, nobody writes a diary or a journal. Peöple blog.  #626531

Blogs are public, diaries are not, journals are in-between.

I'm nobody! Who are you?
Are you nobody, too?
Then there's a pair of us — don't tell!
They'd banish us, you know.

How dreary to be somebody!
How public, like a frog
To tell your name the livelong day
To an admiring bog!

Yes. (At least for nobodies.  :-)
