Frage: | durchparieren | |
Vielen Dank! |

We say 'rein a horse in' from a gallop to a trot, to a walk. We also talk of reining a person in, if they seem to be going too far or too fast. |

Durchparieren is a down-transition from a faster gait to a slower gait or from any gait to a halt (canter > trot; trot > walk; canter > halt, and so on). So you could use the simple "transition." But in an instructional context, that would only make sense if the gaits are (or the halt is) specified. For example, aus dem Galopp [zum Halt] durchparieren would be "transition from the canter [to the halt.]" While "reining in" clearly implies slowing down or stopping, this term is not used in classical dressage. Transitioning involves weight shifts, leg positioning, breathing stops and starts and, lastly, some hand motion. "Reining in" would sound out of place if you're talking about dressage. |

'To reign' means to rule (what a monarch does). 'To rein' means to apply the reins. To rein a horse in means to use the reins to bring it within a certain limit, to stop it running out of control. This is a general riding term, applicable to any situation where you need to limit the horse's speed. |

Horse-related sign in one of our parks: Bridal Path -----> Have to differ on "any situation." Durchparieren is classical dressage jargon, especially in instruction. "Reining in" is not used in classical dressage contexts. It is quite different from durchparieren, which almost never involves a sharp pull on the reins and often calls for an emphatic application of spurs and a letting go of the reins. |
