So David botched it, did he?

Shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander

"David Cameron's negotiation strategy has let Britain down... the outcome is not a sign of strength but a profound weakness.

"Britain this morning is more isolated than at any point in the 35 years of British membership of Europe.

"It is not in Britain's national interest for decisions to be taken without us even at the table. It's a direct result of David Cameron spending more time negotiating with his own backbenchers than with our European partners."

I'm reminded of the Irish nationalist slogan 'A nation once again!'

the Brits are still trying to kid themselves that they are independent and are able to protect their own interests regardless of Europe. Mind you, some pundits have pointed out on TV that this is not so. I can't see what Cameron is trying to achieve here. Some say better in and have a say than out and without influence and I would agree.
Well, big-(society)-mouth David has been cut down to size by a situation such a nannified chappy cannot possibly cope with  #631803

Instead of reining in the City and its excesses, he mollycoddles the very financial gamesters and tricksters who have recklessly contributed to making our global economic crisis nearly intractable. Is that so he can make his cut?

Much of Europe is  marching towards federation.
Cameron has rightly pulled Britain back from the next stage in that process.
We are better off outside the coming US of E.
We can remain outside the political union and outside the single currency, while staying within the political alliance and the free trade area.
Alliance, trade and common interests can all flourish in that scenario.

Outside any US of EU, Britain would be reduced the status of Canada or Mexico vis-à-vis the US  #632034

While Europe unifies, the UK cannot stay outside the political union and keep what influence she has intact in a loose political alliance and free trade area. This would simply marginalize the UK to the point of turning it into the new Europe's new Balkans. Not unlike the Balkans, the UK shows clear signs of internal rifts that may sooner or later lead to Scottish independence / sovereignty etc. Perhaps that is one aspect of Cameron's game. After all, is he not of Scots origin?
