Frage: | Wahrhaftig eine klapprige Kiste! | |
"Kracks! Die Kette reißt. Sie bleibt auf der Straße liegen. Der Polizist stellt sich mit einem Fuß aufs Pedal und stößt sich ab, als wäre er mit einem Roller unterwegs. Er nähert sich dem Dieb. Kracks! Das Pedal bricht ab. "Wahrhaftig eine klapprige Kiste!", grummelt Pepe. Dear me, a rickety trunk! = piece of furniture is in very bad condition, and likely to break easily?? or idiom?? grummeln = murmeln?? |
Antwort: | rickety crate = rickety (old) car | #636437 |
grummels = grumbles |
Antwort: | dict | #636444 |
dict.cc: Klapperkiste this is the same. |
Antwort: | Hier scheint sich Kiste auf ein Fahrrad zu beziehen > push-bike | #636452 |
Antwort: | grummeln > between grunting and murmuring | #636453 |
Antwort: | Kracks > the chain made a ripping sound < < < If no cartoonist steps in. | #636455 |
Antwort: | this one fits better ... | #636456 |
dict.cc: Grummeln > to grumble (Sorry about the Klapperkiste. I had forgotten about the bike.) "old clunker" also works for bikes. |
Antwort: | Do we also associate the grumbling sound with human beings? Are grummeln and grumble not false friends really? | #636461 |
grumble 2 [no object] make a low rumbling sound: thunder was grumbling somewhere in the distance http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/grumble?q=grumble |
Antwort: | Not in AE | #636468 |
Don't know how the BE crowd sees it. But in AE "grumble" is exactly what a discontent person would do. Google: "grandpa was grumbling" Google: "she grumbled" Google: "he grumbled" In AE thunder "rumbles" without g. Google: "thunder rumbled" BTW: your oxford source also has it as a human sound. |
Antwort: | Grumble is fine in BE for people moaning and muttering, | #636482 |
and although thunder would normally rumble, grumble is also occasionally used. |
Antwort: | grummeln | #636488 |
grummeln = to grumble = to complain, especially continuously and about unimportant things, right? or to mumble - to say something in a way that is not loud or clear enough so that your words are difficult to understand? There is a word "grumble" in dicct.cc but I found out that it is not in my Langenscheidt - Großwörterbuch Englisch/Deutsch, instead of to mumble / to rumble. It is confusing me. "Kracks! Die Kette reißt. Sie bleibt auf der Straße liegen. Der Polizist stellt sich mit einem Fuß aufs Pedal und stößt sich ab, als wäre er mit einem Roller unterwegs. Er nähert sich dem Dieb. Kracks! Das Pedal bricht ab. "Wahrhaftig eine klapprige Kiste!", grummelt Pepe. Which one fits to what Pepe grummelt? grumble or mumble? |
Antwort: | mumble = murmeln oder nuscheln | #636521 |
but it doesn't say that in the German text. It says "grummeln." |
Chat: | BTW Langenscheidt has its limitations. | #636522 |
Not to mention some wonderful bloopers. |
Antwort: | Sorry - I had been wrong to think grummeln did not imply any discontent in German | #636700 |
