Frage:
Vertrag abschließen
von Saluton1 (US), Last modified: 2012-02-16, 23:39  like dislike  Spam?
I once attended a legal seminar held by an American lawyer and he claimed that translating Vertrag abschließen as "to conclude an agreement" is a mistranslation. He claimed that the correct translation should be "to enter into an agreement."

Any comments?

"to conclude" bedeutet zwar auch "abschließen", aber eher im Sinn von "beenden, fertigstellen"  #642291

Most people here in Virginia who deal with such things would consider them synonyms.  #642294

While "enter into an agreement" is used more often than "conclude an agreement," there's nothing wrong with the latter. The phrase "conclude an agreement" in official Commonwealth of Virginia documents is certainly not a translation error.
Google: "conclude an agreement" "commonwealth of virginia"
Google: "enter into an agreement" "commonwealth of virginia"

"To enter into an agreement" seems to be more common nowadays, but "to conclude an agreement" is certainly (still) a correct phrase, too - but perhaps a little bit antiquated, as I come across it mainly in older documents. It most certainly is NOT a mistranslation.
