Frage:
to find oneself doing sth. - general question to native speakers
von gamby (DE), 2012-07-19, 12:15  like dislike  Spam?
it seems this phrase at times is not at all about 'finding sth.', rather it appears to be some sort of colloquialism that may be omitted.

e.g. Three or four times a week we found ourselves stretched out on big blue mats, surrounded by fifteen or twenty other students.

any clarifications much appreciated!

The implication is that there was no plan. It just happened.  #665250

Another implication can be a change so gradual that you don't notice the change until you're faced with the dramatic result.. After five years, I found myself with no money and no friends.

Wir fanden uns drei-, viermal die Woche auf blauen Matten ausgestreckt wieder…

The feeling that 'to find oneself' describes is a more or less sudden realization that one is in a state of being without really knowing how this came about. It can also refer to arriving at a place without knowing how one got there. After walking through the woods for hours, I suddenly found myself standing at the edge of a small pond. Not sure now how to express this in German; it'll come to me later.

it does imply some sort of unexpected or unplaned realisation on hindsight.
as in your example: Nach fünf Jahren fand ich mich ohne Geld und Freunde wieder.
Antwort:
Yes, but the "found ourselves" refers to the state of being on mats surrounded by students.  #665275

I don't think it refers to the speaker and fifteen or twenty other students coming together again (sich wiederfinden).
Antwort:
no, it refers to the speaker and his friend, who share the same general situation  #665276

gamby, yes, no doubt.  #665277

My point was that regardless of who is involved, the found ourselves is not about people drifting apart and finding each other again (although that may be true). It's about sharing the discovery that they were in a situation (on mats, surrounded) that was not planned.
