Could there be some sort of connection to the girl Mingo who died as a child? Her parents called her der Mingo because they had hoped for a baby boy.

I'm sorry to have misled you:  I see it in my mind as a play/film; it is in fact a book-though I believe it was made into a film. Yes, it's the switch in gender that puzzles me. I'll go back and check.

But the line in which Mingo Swieter talks about her dead girl-child and says "Wir nannten es  d e r  Mingo, weil wir eigentlich bestimmt auf einen Buben gerechnet hatten" may not have been in the film. There are some other lines in the book making a connection between Mingo von Truschkowitz and the dead child Mingo.

Edit: Apparently, there are a few copies of the Lorna Dietz translation for sale. But you have to reach deep into your pocket to buy this one:
