Frage:
Am Rad drehen
von Brazilianchap (BR), 2013-05-23, 13:07  like dislike  Spam?
Hallo! Wie geht es euch?

I have a question!! I've heard in a song the sentence: " Würdest du für mich ganz allein an einem Rad drehen, würdest du? ".

I have tried searching this: " am Rad drehen " and I came across some " different " contexts and meanings such as:

Going crazy/mad
Doing something unusual/extraordinary

They made a translation into Spanish of this same song and at that exact bit, they translated like: " Would you grab the moon for me, please? "

But I'd like to know more examples of phrases and usage of this term " Am Rad drehen " if possible!

Thanks in advance!! Vielen Dank!

"An einem Rad drehen" means "to work together." ("Am Rad drehen" has a completely different meaning).  #708540

Since it's impossible to "work together by yourself," the implication is "would you do the impossible for me?"

I think the origin of an einem Rad drehen is the act of people working together to get a stuck cart out of the mud. They do that by grabbing the spokes of a wheel (in die Speichen fassen) and trying with all their might to move the cart by turning the wheel. The equivalent English for that is "put your shoulder to the wheel." But that doesn't necessarily imply cooperation with others. So it wouldn't work as a translation because you can "put your shoulder to the wheel" all by yourself.

The lyrics of the song: http://www.songtexte.biz/annett-louisan-wurdest-du/

What do you think she meant in the song?! And can you give me some examples of sentences, phrases with " an einem Rad drehen " and " Am Rad drehen ". I mean, I read the definition and get the meaning but I can't seem to make up sentences with them so I can see if they'd be perfectly applied or not! :/

As said above, I think the meaning is "would you do the impossible for me?" The person who translated the lyrics into Spanish obviously thought that as well and used the (impossible to do) "grab the moon for me." For English, you would have to make up a phrase that implies doing the impossible. I would forget about the image of the wheel completely.
But since you asked about those wheel images, here are some examples:
- Wir müssen alle an einem Rad drehen um unsere Stadt attraktiver zu machen. > We all have to put our shoulder to the wheel to make our city more attractive.
- Das kann ich nicht mehr aushalten, der Chef dreht doch völlig am Rad. > I can't take this any longer, the boss has clearly gone crazy. But note: this is NOT the phrase in the song lyric because it's missing the einem.
