Frage:
Heimatgau

I came across a railway station in Linz with a huge banner that read "Der Heimatgau grüßt seinen Befreier Heil Hitler". I get the horrible gist of it, but I cannot find a translation of "Heimatgau". Google reveals a series of books by that name, also from Linz, republished by a museum there:
http://www.amazon.com/Der-Heimatgau-Linz-Ober%C3%B6sterreichischer-...
I'd appreciate help with a translation and, if it warrants it, inclusion in http://dict.cc.

If this is an offensive word, please accept my apologies for my ignorance.

simple combination of Heimat + Gau (you can check both on dict.cc or wikipedia)

Whole Austria was referred to as Heimatgau, since Hitler was Austrian.

Linz was the "Patenstadt" of Adolf Hitler and Braunau his home town.

The reference is at 7.17, if you can bear to watch it that far.

I was referring to that Catesse and he mentioned it himself. Those flags or this decoration in general was made to welcome Hitler.

that Austrian Bundesländer were re-named Gaue by the Nazis. Upper Austria (capital Linz) was named 'Oberdonau'. It was Hitler's "Heimatgau", his home town Braunau being also situated there.
The home districts of other people were of course not of equal importance, therefore one won't find the word 'Heimatgau' very often in literature.

(Gau in it'self is not a Nazi-invention, but part of the name of some districts in Southern Germany and Austria, e.g. Breisgau, Ponggau ...)

Old English, by contrast, has only traces of the word, which was ousted by scire from an early time, in names such as Noxga gā , Ohtga gā and perhaps in gōman, ġēman (yeoman) , which would then correspond to the Old High German gaumann (Grimm) although the OED prefers connection of yeoman to young .  Wikipedia(EN): Gau_%28country_subdivision%29

Frisch 1, 324b, Schmeller), altengl. ʒôman, ʒêman Stratm. 264, vgl. ags. geoman, iuman 'mann der vorzeit' Grein 1, 503. 2, 148.
