Frage: | it isn't quite on the up and up | |
Heißt das soviel wie "es ist nicht das Gelbe vom Ei"? Es ist nichts besonders Tolles / hoch Angesehenes? Hier im Kontext: "I’ve also encountered many people in network marketing businesses, who show signs that they believe that what they are doing isn’t quite on the up and up, which makes it difficult for them to talk with people." |
Antwort: | on the up and up | #719641 |
Antwort: | The second meaning in Ivy's link (in case you were in any doubt). | #719644 |
Antwort: | Danke, Ivy | #719647 |
"Ist nicht das Gelbe vom Ei" trifft beide Bedeutungen recht gut, finde ich. Joanne: I am not so sure what is really meant. Those people might believe that it won't really bring them ahead in life - then meaning 1 would be accurate. |
Antwort: | For that meaning, it would have to be that they are not quite on the up and up. | #719654 |
But using not quite in that sentence would be odd, I think. I'm still for the not quite honest/respectable meaning. |
Antwort: | In the U.S., it would mean "something slightly dishonest about it." | #719655 |
It's difficult to talk to people about a proposition which you feel is not quite honest. |
Antwort: | agree with Joanne on this. | #719656 |
Antwort: | OK, thanks | #719657 |
I think a good solution would be, "dass das, was sie tun, nicht besonders seriös ist". |
