Frage:
mit der Muttermilch eingeben
von gamby (DE), 2013-09-27, 10:29  like dislike  Spam?
Ihre Großzügigkeit ist durch die praktisch mit der Muttermilch weitergegebene Lebenseinstellung geprägt, dass Geben seliger ist als Nehmen.

This generous attitude is virtually handed down at birth, characterized by the attitude to life that giving is more blessed than receiving.

gibt es im Englischen überhaupt den Begriff 'etwas mit der Muttermilch eingegeben'?

Their/Her generosity is characterized by the belief/attitude/philosophy learnt in the cradle / when very young that giving is more blessed than receiving.

Another thought - learnt at her mother's breast would also be possible but doesn't sound so good in the plural.

I don't think passed on with the mother's milk is particularly idiomatic, especially in this figurative sense.  #727553

All the hits in the google link are from one site and are literal - anything you eat or drink when breastfeeding will be passed on to the baby in your milk.
Antwort:
Is the German all that idiomatic? Because of practically, I think it is meant literally here.   #727558

Is praktisch being used correctly here? I can't make any of the Duden definitions fit*. Or can it be used with the same meaning as practically (almost - http://oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/practically?q=prac...) but Duden hasn't caught up with usage?

*I can't see how this is literal - attitudes aren't passed on in breast milk. A literal use would be something like - she drank a lot of coffee when she was breastfeeding so a lot of caffeine was passed on with the mother's milk (I wouldn't put it like that, but I wanted to use the same phrase).

A case of coincidence, so to speak.

I don't think "praktisch" is literal here. More in the sense of: Er hat das praktisch schon fertiggestellt. Er hat praktisch so gut wie keine Kenntnisse. = so gut wie
http://synonyme.woxikon.de/synonyme/praktisch.php

Probably something like "pretty much".
Antwort:
uffie - so praktisch can mean practically (which was what I thought) but I couldn't find that definition in Duden.  #727626

But the entry just has it listed as an adjective, which would match practical, I couldn't find any entry for it as an adverb.

4; Proteus - that's obviously where our difference of opinion lies. To me, the literal meaning is that something is actually a constituent or ingredient of breast milk and is passed on to the baby, whereas you meant that it just happened at the same time, which to me is more a figurative meaning of the phrase.

I don't know why the Duden doesn't include the use as an adverb, it's certainly widespread.
