But by far the most common function of the words was in the phrase tag and rag, meaning the rabble, the riffraff, the lower classes, or the members of any group held in low esteem. The exact form could vary, as in "tagge and rag" (c. 1535, Oxford English Dictionary ) and "tag, rag" (1609, Oxford ). http://voices.yahoo.com/ragtag-bobtail-origin-meaning-expression-38... |

looking down their noses and saying the lower classes or the lower orders when talking about 'riff-raff' or 'undesirables'. Or perhaps that's just a stereotype of 'posh' people :-) Some form of disambiguation would work. dict.cc: gesindel - common folk is also in as a translation for Gesindel, that could do with the same disambiguation. |
Antwort: | Similar problem in German. I know of people who suspect users of the rather dated word Gesinde > domestics / farm hands to imply Gesindel ... | #727579 |

As for Gesindel > common folk, I suggest deleting the trans. |

I just think that "Gesindel" has a much more negative connotation |
Antwort: | Yes - I wanted to say that there are people who might use the lower classes/orders with that negative connotation. | #727621 |

I think a modern equivalent of "the lower classes" is the relatively new term "Prekariat". http://www.zeit.de/2006/18/Prekariat |
