Frage:
ruhig öfter
von Shratterpi (US), 2013-12-25, 01:52  like dislike  Spam?
The following is from 2 video game manuals about the same game;

German manual:
Laß den Wahrsager ruhig öfter in seine Kristallkugel schauen.

English manual:
You should have your fortune read as many times as possible.

My attempt at translating the German sentence:
Have the Fortune Teller/Soothsayer quietly often look into his crystal ball.
Let the Fortune Teller/Soothsayer quietly frequently stare in his crystal ball.

I have seen ruhig öfter used in other sentences such as:
Könnt ich ruhig öfter haben so einen Tag
but I do not know what the above sentence means neither...

Common mistranslation.
Doesn't "ruhig" in this case mean: it is OK if you do this, it is permitted to do this, don't be worried about it?
The English manual is wrong, but neither does "ruhig" (in this case) mean "quietly.
(English would be better as "You may have your fortune told, etc.)

What I failed to mention in the beginning is that this is a video game released in 1991 for the SNES called The Legend of Zelda A Link to the Past. It was originally released in Japan, then translated into English, then into the 3 other languages for the European PAL release, French, German and Spanish.

What I am trying to do is read the German manual in order to better read German.

I have been given the following information on another websites forum from one of their users;

Flavouring particles again?. These are quite hard to explain to learners and even harder to translate.

"quietly" doesn't fit. The "ruhig" has an encouraging character here. I'm afraid, I am not able to find a suitable translation for "ruhig", at least not in this moment (I doubt I ever will). However, I well reflect on it for a while.

In regard to the other sentence "Könnt ich ruhig öfter haben so einen Tag":
Unidiomatically expressed, this means something like "I could gladly have such days more often = I'd love to have such a more often"

(You may want to) Get the fortune teller to gaze into his crystal ball more often.
This ruhig is of the "you had better (because it won't hurt)" variety, nothing to do with "quietly." It sets up for the next sentence where it should be revealed what the advantage is of having the fortune teller take another look, e.g. he may be sloppy and miss something if he only checks the crystal ball once.
