It's a company that has just been explaining how it trains its employees in-house and how you can have an entire career with them, so I've kind of been assuming "fördern" is either encourage or promote, but I guess it could also be "support".

Surely it's more "we ask a lot of our employees and give them a lot in return", surely there's an ask/challenge element in "fordern" - although I agree that they're using it because it sounds good more than because of what it specifically means.

Ta. I'm currently still liking "We ask a lot of our employees and give them a lot in return." the best, as it's short and snappy and strikes me as something I wouldn't be surprised to hear a UK employer saying (specifically with "and" not "but" because asking a lot isn't meant to be seen as entirely negative or entirely a contrast).

Thanks, skadicct, I think that's probably most concisely expressed as "support" (although that could also have other meanings). My preferred solution definitely doesn't clearly say that, but I think within the context of my text that's OK, as they've already talked a fair bit about providing training, so it's clear that's one of their things. The important thing is that "fördern" doesn't mean "promote" here.
