I would say that "Selbstgebrutzeltest" is meat which is grilled. It should not matter whether a frying pan, a wok or a BBQ-grill is used.

Might be used differently in different regions. For me gebrutzelt always means fried. Brutzeln means sizzle and if you prepare e.g. a stew nothing sizzles. Brutzeln doen't necessarily imply quick either, though to fry sth. normally is quicker than to to roast it in an oven etc.
You might use brutzeln for a couple of fried eggs or a pork sausage, but certainly not for a sandwich.

my understanding of "Selbstgebrutzeltes" is not that it is a snack, it could be a steak or a Schnitzel for example, and it usually involves meat in some shape or form...

"To fry something up" is common in the U.S. western states. But it suggests a meal that's quickly done without much planning. "Being that everyone is hungry as a bear, I guess I need to fry something up."

True, Iriemon. I was thinking more about the fact that the notion of doing something yourself is not there in "frying something up." You could go to a diner and say to the cook "Fry me up some hash browns, will ya?" Curious: the selbst stands in opposition to what--any meal cooked by someone other than yourself?
