Frage:
fortgebracht
von Windbuchse (US), 2014-12-09, 11:34  like dislike  Spam?
Die Artillerie führte 3-‚ 6- und 12 pfündige Kanonen, 7 pfündige Haubitzen; jedem Infanterie-Bataillon waren 4 Regimentsgeschütze beigegeben. Die deutsche Cavallerie war mit Gewehren, die ungarische blos mit Pistolen und Säbeln bewaffnet, die Grenz-Scharfschützen hatten 'Windbüchsen, welche auf Tragthieren fortgebracht wurden.

I have:
The artillery operated 3-, 6- and 12-pounder guns, howitzers 7-pounder; each infantry battalion regiment were added 4 guns. The German cavalry was equipped with guns, the Hungarian merely armed with pistols and sabers, the Border Sharpshooter airguns, which were taken away on pack animals.

".. taken away on pack animals" or is this actually saying something to the effect of "..., which were transported on pack animals."

I am pretty sure, "fortgebracht" is "transported" here.

You are right: "fortbringen" in today's usage would be like "wegbringen" - to take away. But I guess the "fort..." is used like in "(sich) fortbewegen" here, which usually simply means "to move".

And I agree with Catwoman's "the Border Sharpshooters had airguns". I do not understand the capital letters, but you may have a reason for that.

Just my sloppy translation. Usually, I don't go back over and fine tune the translation into English until  exactly  sure of what is being said. Just missed the "hatten" and the capital letters are from the original German text. I like to keep the capital letters of nouns, when first going to English, so that I know for sure which words are being used as nouns. Once I have the full translation, then I go back over and try to make everything correct for English. At least, hopefully.....

Thanks so much for the help!

The 'each infantry battalion regiment' is not right.  #780160

Should be: ...each infantry battalion was given 4 infantry support guns.
These light cannons were assigned to infantry regiments and later on, to infantry battalions to increase the firepower of these units. When the artillery became more mobile, this was no longer done. The name Regimentsgeschütze comes from the initial assignment of these support guns to the regiments.

Thanks so much, MichaelK. That certainly improves the translation.
