Was denken Sie über Zigarettenwerbung?

4;Ivy: tobacco companies have to make sure that people start smoking and keep smoking.

Any company has to attract new customers to replace the ones lost to death (mostly due to normal aging).  Since every customer will die at some point, the customer base will shrink unless its attracts new customers.
The tobacco industry has to deal with a more extreme version of this problem: their products lead to large numbers of premature deaths, therefore they need a higher rate of adding new customers to their customer base.

4;Ivy: me too. I never smoked even a single cigarette. The guys hanging out on my primary school's schoolyard kept offering me some, but while one of my friends started to smoke then (he was eight years old) I resisted. In grammar school I was the only 13-year-old girl who didn't smoke. I have worked at several cancer research institutes and clinics and several of the professors and colleagues managed to rationalize their smoking (and drinking) habits. Some still do. These substances are really addictive.

Wow, that sounds very interesting. When my husband was at school he was and his classmates were shown pictures of smoker's legs and smoker's lungs. He was very shocked and therefore he and his brother convinced their parents to stop smoking. They were successful. My mother-in-law has just celebrated her 89th birthday.

4;Ivy: we were schown such pictures, as well, but only when we were already 15 years old. I knew that smoking was very unhealthy and my brother and I tried to convince our mother to stop smoking. She agreed, but although she wasn't a heavy smoker it took her very long to stop. She now calls herself a "dry smoker", because she thinks she would take up smoking again if she ever touched a cigarette. My father had no problem to reduce smoking and drinking when he reached his mid-twenties. Most of their artist friends didn't and many of them died prematurely (very boheme, a 100 years ago they would have died from tuberculosis). It's interesting that there is a genetic component, a social and an economic one to substance abuse. My impression is that smoking is nowadays more common in lower socioeconomic classes than among more wealthy people - and that you can identify an indie movie by two things: cursing and smoking.

aorta aneurism  #787466

Among the diseases and fatal consequences of smoking, one seldom hears the risk of "rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm". This is so insidious that stopping smoking barely reduces the risk. The aorta bursts, and the sufferer bleeds to death internally over 10-12 hours.
