VP5 needed to re-open "off-hand | aus dem Stand"
von narionk (US/DE), 2015-03-29, 23:12  like dislike  Spam?
Would a VP5 member be willing to assist me in re-opening the following entry and changing it to read as follows? (Only the EN side needs editing.)

Current EN: off-hand [rare for offhand]
Suggested EN: offhand [also: off-hand]

For the background on this requested edit, please refer to this previous forum thread:
Basically, the reasoning behind the change is thus: No compelling evidence has been provided of the rarity of "off-hand", and several pieces of evidence to the contrary have been provided. Considering there is currently no entry which reads "offhand | aus dem Stand [ohne lang zu überlegen]", and "offhand" seems to be the preferred spelling, I suggest we change the EN side of the entry to read "offhand [also: off-hand]"

Unfortunately, German native speakers not believing an English native speaker... sorry, I am afraid I cannot help.
I vaguely remember being told it should be hyphenated  #794857

but I can't recall where, when or by whom.
It didn't get edited out of books in either form.  It's also not an old vs. new spelling thing.  I did book searches with various limits.  Nothing stuck out.
I guess we're left with personal preference.

Did anyone check whether it might be AE vs. BE?
BE tends to have stricter rules than we do, judging from some other forum posts here.

Webster's has it without hyphen and as two words as an spv.

I think "off-handed" is different enough that it could be a separate entry.

The ODO link to "offhanded" as an adjective is a different kind of usage.

If "off hand" is now spv., it could also be a separate entry to avoid making this one too complex and confusing.
