It's hyphenated at the end of the line and certainly looks like ahuden, could be ahu-den, but that doesn't help. I've already caught one typo on this page so could be just that. I can translate the sentence, other than for this one weird word. | ||

ich tippe mal auf ahnen oder ahnden können im Sinne von vermuten u = n ist ja auch sehr ähnlich | ||

Your text might really read "ahuden" when "ahnden" was meant. In olden days, when type was set by hand, it was easy to put some slugs (see http://contribute.dict.cc/?action=edit&id=122443) back in the wrong section of the printer's storage box. That is the origin of the saying "Mind your p's and q's". It was easy to mix up "u" and "n". On the next job, the type-setter might then pick up a slug from the n-box and set it without checking what it really was. If the proof-reader missed the error (if there was a proof-reader), then the text would have been printed incorrectly. | ||

ich war als Kind sehr gerne in der Setzerei. Das schien mir einer der attraktivsten Jobs zu sein, die es gibt. Die Setzer waren auch freundlich mit uns und haben uns Namensstempel gesetzt. Als ich erwachsen war, gab es den Beruf schon nicht mehr. | ||

As a kid, I clearly recall my mother telling me about her first job at a small local newspaper in Nebraska where she was a typesetter, and heard the p's and q's story so many times ;-o That there was another example of "ahuden" was found in the text means that the "n" type box had a number of stray "u"s in it. | ||

Parallel case, but that refers to handwriting, of course. This was a typesetting error, and it occurred in English as well as German. I worked on a newspaper for a while when I was sixteen. Not in typesetting, of course; that was a man's job. But I did some typesetting many years later while doing volunteer work in a museum; they had several historical typesetting outfits there. | ||

Thanks Catesse. Yes, I referred to handwriting but it could easily have been that the typesetter misread the original script in the first place... | ||
