4;anon, are you translating "verlängerten Werkbänken" as "outsourced work"? That makes sense, but doesn't sound very literal, is it figurative? |
Antwort: | yes, "verlängerte Werkbank" is figurative | #800166 |

Thanks! I'd have got that completely wrong. Do you think it would be worthwhile putting this in the dict: outsourced work - verlängerte Werkbänke {pl} [fig.] Or should it actually be "contract manufacturing"? Wikipedia(EN): Contract_manufacturer |
Antwort: | #800171 | |
verlängerte Werkbank is already in. |
Antwort: | #800174 | |
4;ddr, it's in as "extended work bench", so I guess my first sentence was accidentally right. I wonder how well used that phrase is figuratively in English. I can find it figuratively, but it doesn't come up as frequently as I'd expect in hits without any link to Germany. |
Antwort: | ddr | #800175 |
Sollte dieser Eintrag nicht noch einen Zusatz erhalten wie [fig.] oder eine Erklärung: http://www.wirtschaftslexikon24.com/d/verlaengerte-werkbank/verlaen... |
Antwort: | Google "extended workbench",metaphor, Country: the UK, yields hardly any relevant results | #800177 |
same with metaphoric(al) instead |
Antwort: | #800179 | |
fig. might be a possibility. On the other hand, if verlängerte Werkbank has no other meaning, mostly people who know the term will look it up. If the English trans is doubtful, a second entry with an explanation on the English side might be useful. Okay, ich habs doch aufgemacht. Weiß aber nicht, ob meine englische Disamb. Sinn ergibt. Bitte nachschauen. |

In English, an "extended workbench" is a workbench (table you do work on) that has been extended (made longer). You have to know it has a figurative meaning to know that contract manufacturing is being referred to, and as I mentioned, I'm not convinced this term is common in English. |
Chat: | Um bei der Metapher zu bleiben ... | #800193 |
... könnte man die verlängerten Werkbänke auch wieder absägen um die Wertschöpfung wieder ins eigene Land zurückzuholen, so wie man alte Zöpfe abschneidet. |
Antwort: | The entry has already been verified as extended workbench with an explanation. | #800202 |
I really don't think this is the best solution - in other words, I share Windfall's and anon's doubts that extended workbench means anything other than a long table/desk that you can do practical work on. Possible solutions - removing extended workbench and leaving the explanation in brackets; changing it to contract manufacturing. But it does need reopening again. |

The "an extended workbench" book ghits in this sense are all from .de sources, true. Contract manufacturing would only cover part of the meaning. It wouldn't express that country xy is in danger of becoming just a verlängerte Werkbank of country yz. So, if you don't think, that the "extended workbench" concept might catch on, to my mind an explanation would be better. |
Antwort: | #800220 | |
I don't think we can rely on it catching on. What would you say in English [contract manufacturing in another country]? |
Antwort: | verlängerte Werkbank > capacity subcontracting; sometimes also: production offshoring | #800264 |

Do you have a specific suggestion to put in the dict, Proteus? I'm happy to put something in, but i don't know what the entry should be |
