Frage:	to pull back a smile

Context: She says something slightly embarrasing (in her own view at least) and then it says in my text: "He pulled back a smile and looked out the window, before asking her his next question." Just to be sure: Is he suppressing the smile? Thank you for your help! edit: typo

	Dankeschön! Ich kannte "to pull back" aus anderen Zusammenhängen in dieser Bedeutung, aber nicht auf "smiles" bezogen. Da es manchmal etwas seltsame Auswüchse gibt, war ich erst unsicher, ob es vielleicht eine umgangssprachliche Art war, zu sagen, dass "seine Mundwinkel sich zu einem Lächeln zurückzogen" (wörtlich genommen). Aber so bin ich beruhigt, dass Ihr das geraderücken konntet! Gute Nacht!

	von atemp (US), 2015-09-12, 06:29 Spam? To me a "pulled back smile" would resemble a rictus grin, not a suppressed or stifled smile. The writer is obviously desperate for an original phrase. I've never heard of the prepositional verb to pull back being applied to a smile, and would suggest it's more useful as a flowery literary phrase than as standard EN usage.

	Ah, that's interesting! So my doubts were legit ... Thank you for clarifying! I think the writer is trying hard to use "cool" teenage slang - but I don't think this qualifies. ;-)

	von ß-Ellipsis, 2015-09-12, 14:37 Spam? 91.10.0... Im Deutschen gibt es den Ausdruck "Er verkniff sich ein Lächeln." Bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob das hier gemeint ist, weil das eher "He refrained from a smile." entspräche.

This is quite distinct from the legitimate phrase, he hitched up a grin which implies that said grin was forced or insincere, or otherwise did not reflect the internal emotional state of the grinner.
