Frage:
near term potential
von romy (CZ/GB), Last modified: 2015-09-13, 07:23  like dislike  Spam?
Kontext: Vorstellung eines Pharma-Unternehmens.
"XY is a late stage therapeutics company with near term commercial potential."
Ich glaube, da wurde etwas durcheinandergebracht. Vielleicht könnte gemeint sein:
"XY is a company producing therapeutics for late stage, near term patients with commercial potential."

Antwort:
term = terminally ill ?

Too bad you had to send it off already. Grammatically, the sentence states that the company has near term commercial potential, which is nonsense of course.

What they mean is that the drugs for very sick people ("late-stage therapeutics") they develop and patent have the potential to be approved soon ("near term") and can then be sold for profit. "Near term" in the context of  FDA approval to sell would be 2016, but that just as an aside.

If the writer is using "near term" to mean the final stages of a terminal illness, it is rather idiosyncratic jargon. What comes to my mind when I hear "near term" is a pregnant woman due to give birth within a week or two. Otherwise uffie's 10.42 #815996) comment. These may be quite incorrect in context, but the sentence is highly dubious.

4;Catesse: Given that this is a press release for a drug company, I'm certain the "near term commercial potential" refers to profits through commercial sales after FDA approval (as opposed to at-cost sales or giveaways to facilities conducting clinical trials.)

Agree with you 100% on "term" in the medical context being used predominantly in the context of pregnancy.
