Well, not really only in Australia. This could easily happen in India and South-East Asia at least.

I can do without such excitement.  At least those snakes are non-poisonous.

In Florida there are pygmy rattlesnakes.  Only a couple feet long, but just as poisonous as
the big ones.  Daughter has found one in her house more than once.  There they come in
during flooding, to find a dry place.

But my pair of pet Bredli pythons is bigger - 3.20 metres each at nine years of age. This species is named after the Austrian backpacker Johann Bredl who discovered these beauties on a hitchhiking trip through Central Australia. They are absolutely harmless to humans. Mine are actually very friendly and love their cuddles. No need to fear!

I wonder what would happen in the middle of the night with the lights out and people half asleep....

A friend of mine breeds various snakes. They can be incredibly fast when catching their prey (boas too) and they are pleasant to the touch, soft and warm and smooth.

4;romy -- what do you feed them?
4;parker -- that was the first thing I noticed.  Somebody needs a maid service.

Jim: I got a boa myself. When she was a kid, I fed her small mice. She's about 3m now, so she gets rats.  #816524

I have seen a carpet snake swallow an adult possum. I think they could swallow a baby up to about six months, but I have never heard of one doing so.

Everglades  #816547

Our Florida Everglades Nat'l Park has been invaded by non-native pythons, as a result of people
buying them as pets, then turning them loose in the wild when they become too big.  They are
destroying the native wildlife, even eating small alligators.  But the big alligators get revenge.

Are there "sidewinders" (rattlesnake) anywhere but here?

Edit:  A quick research says no.

If you restrict the term "sidewinders" to rattlesnakes: No. If you extend it to any snake with that form of locomotion: Yes. Probably in any continent where there are sandy deserts.
