Frage:
Sozialisationsleistung
von Raskol88 (UN), 2015-09-17, 21:37  like dislike  Spam?
Vor den schulischen Ansprüchen gerät die familiale Sozialisationsleistung leicht in die Situation des Defizitären und Kompensationsbedürftigen.

Ich verstehe noch was "gerät" weder "Sozialisationsleistung leicht" bedeutet hier. Konnt ihr mir bitte helfen?

Faced with the demands of school, the socializing capacity of the family tends to end up in conditions full of deficiencies that call for compensation  #816745

Auf gut Deutsch, die Schule kann Familien ganz schön unter Druck setzen.
In plain English, school may put quite some strain on families.

From an academic point of view, the family's socializing capacity is quickly dismissed as lacking and in need of help.  #816753

In anderen Worten: Lehrer sind sehr schnell dabei, Eltern als unfähig abzustempeln. Leicht = quickly, easily.

I think Michaels interpretation is correct, though schulisch doesn't exactly mean academic.
This "vor den Ansprüchen" is a rare and rather difficult phrase. You could maybe rephrase the sentence  into:
Vor den pädagogischen Ansprüchen der Schule kann die familiäre Sozailisationsleistung oft nicht bestehen, sie scheint defiziär und kompensationsbedürftig.
Oder einfacher:
Aus Sicht der Schule scheint die familiäre Sozialisationsleistung oft defizitär, ...

Once confronted with the demands of schooling, the family's own efforts at socialization are immediately found wanting and in need of support.  #816764

nice one callixte. German scientific gobbledegook broken down into understandable English. :-)

But the flavour ― or shall we say the insipidity ― of the original is entirely lost.  #816771

quite so but so much of German scholarly work tries too hard to sound educated to the point where the original message is all but lost. English is much more to the point and when translating scholarly and legal work one has to decide whether to concentrate on the style, the impression on the reader, or the actual message and contents.
Chat:
As the message is not worth mentioning, I think the insipidity of the sentence is all that counts.  #816777

a translator is there to translate not to make value judgements about the original text ;-) The alternative is to refuse the order.
And not to forget, usually a text needs to be translated so people can understand it :-)

I did try to bring some of the pretentiousness ("academic point of view") across in my first attempt. Above is what I should have written. I'm a great fan of preserving flavor, but the original is almost incomprehensible. At any rate, Raskol88 has several options now.

Once again, Michael's interpretation is right to my mind. The critizism is on the schools not on the parents.

zum Inhalt: mM versucht das geschwurbelte Deutsch hier neutral zu bleiben.

In view of educational demands,  the socialisation efforts/performance (depends on wider context) within the family can easily end up in a situation where they show deficits and need compensating for.

IMO the German geraten implies an involuntary aspect, they don't mean to but that's what's happening.

The above is a pretty literal attempt aimed at bringing across the meaning of the sentence. It's just a draft if you like.

4;ddr: The other side of the coin is that parents often harbor resentment toward the school. Steisstrommler my father called them....
4;uffie: You're right, geraten implies the accidental and unintentional. I ignored it because it seems to be in there only to elevate the style into the "difficult" level.

To address the gerät and reflect the highfalutin style a bit better, try: Concern on part of the school about standards can quickly turn into a denigration of the family's socializing capability and foster the belief that help is needed.
