In some contexts, "to breathe" without the "in" can stand for "draw air in." (He hurried past, not daring to breathe the smell of death.). But I'm not sure if you could translate this action with einatmen.

That's reflected with the translations "Atem holen" and "Luft holen".
But as it stands here, I think it is only confusing. As I understand it, "to breathe in" is used in a figurative way which would be translated as "einsaugen", "in sich aufnehmen". Or "to breathe in" can also mean to inhale sharply, forcefully. So I think that this entry is also *Schrott*:

Thanks, Dracs. It's clear to me how that entry would be confusing. And at any rate, where do you stop with entering figurative uses? For example, "to breathe" can also mean "to have room to expand" in mechanical or construction contexts, or "to be pleasingly surrounded by empty space" in art criticism.

I've suggested something for the disambiguation here - http://contribute.dict.cc/?action=show-history&id=201008 - have a look and vote or suggest something else :-)

as I said to Sasso who also quoted this particular application (breathe (in) a substance) that's ok as breathe is used in the sense of inhaling sth.

But it needs some clear disambiguation as the entry applies only to 1.1 but not 1.2 to 1.9 http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/breathe

Ich habe das Sprachpaar mit sth. / etw. erweitert

Do not inhale spray. Aerosol nicht einatmen.
Do not inhale vapour.

at least I’m still breathing

3. Several Correct Variants
RULE OF THUMB
Always confirm the first correct posting!
It only has to be correct. If it's not the best possible version a better translation can be posted as a new entry.

FINE PRINT / DETAILS
If the proposed entry is not the most usual translation of an entry, but is not wrong, please vote to confirm it.

In case of several correct variants within an entry under discussion (different votes), vote for the version posted first, unless the only difference to the first version is a clarifying comment in square brackets (this doesn't cause outvotes).
If the entry is incorrect and the first voting is [del], confirm the [del] vote.

In case of duplicate entries, confirm the one posted first, improve it in case of errors and delete the one posted later.

If you know a different translation or spelling variant or if such a variant emerges in the voting process, please post it as a new entry and indicate (in a comment to the original version, which you are voting for) that you have made such an additional entry. If possible, please notify the supporters of the rejected version.

dict.cc also includes a function to split translations. This should be used sparingly to avoid creating duplicate entries.

the entry, as it was, was voted straight through, and was not equivalent.

It was not until I brought the discussion to the forum that people came up with a case where the pair fits, see above. The entry has since been amended significantly.

I could not see a case where this could fit and voted for a delete. The other voters offered no sources or explanations why they thought it a valid translation. Had they done so, I would have withdrawn my delete.

Wieso ist einatmen für to breathe falsch?  #828643
von ghinch (DE), 2015-12-23, 23:19  like dislike  Spam?
Merriam-Webster gibt als dritte Bedeutung für to breathe als transitives Verb an:
3:  to take in in breathing <breathe the scent of pines>

Zu viele richtige Einträge werden gelöscht, weil Löscher oft nicht ausreichend Nachforschungen anstellen und zu viele andere einfach mitlöschen, um auf höhere Zahlen zu kommen.
