Frage:
Obligatory delete.
von Catesse (AU), 2016-06-22, 12:07  like dislike  Spam?
Repeated from DE-FR, as it concerns a general principle that needs further serious consideration. Sorry that this will pop up twice on some computers.
As far as I can see, this is a flagrant misuse of the demand that, if the first vote is a delete, either it or the original entry must be confirmed and no changes are permitted.
http://defr.contribute.dict.cc/?action=edit-verified&id=1361883...
It actually refers to a re-open delete. The only thing wrong is a missing space between "." and ":", according to French grammar rules. This is apparently the sole objection by the re-opener. In all other respects, the entry seems to be correct, and it is not a duplicate. This is just not on. Is there some point that I have missed?
The choice between confirming the original entry, which is not entirely correct as it is indeed missing a space, and deleting an otherwise perfectly good entry is one that should not have to be made. I would hesitate to use the word "outrageous" again, so I can only say that this contributor must have been having a bad-hair day.

Maybe this shouldn't be required for reopens, as reopens have this "grace period" to avoid outvotes anyway.

Also, in this case, I'm tempted to consider this an abuse of this rule, because there is no reason for deleting an entry that only misses a space character within the comment section. dict.cc relies on assuming good intentions.

Is that a go-ahead to insert a space and vote for the original entry? The instructions are very explicit not to do this.

The instructions don't say that you should delete a verified translation if there is only one small thing to correct. At no point the instructions say that you should delete an entry at all if you can also correct it. The instructions only say something about what should happen if someone else votes for a deletion.

The basic society rules of goodwill and good intentions say that you don't destroy something useful (in this case by voting for "delete") if it only has a small problem that can easily be fixed. At least not in my book.

What amalgame wanted to do, as I understand it, was to draw attention to the problem of the space characters in French. But this way of doing that is not the best one, becauses it mixes two completely different problems, del votes and the space character.

Your two observations above
--     #846905: "I'm tempted to consider this an abuse of this rule, because there is no reason for deleting an
entry that only misses a space character within the comment section."
--     #846919: "The instructions don't say that you should delete a verified translation if there is only one small
thing to correct. At no point the instructions say that you should delete an entry at all if you can
also correct it. The instructions only say something about what should happen if someone else
                      votes for a deletion."
reveal that we have still not found a satisfactory formulation for the prescription in GL 3,§2 that a delete vote cast by the first voter on any particular entry -- be it a new proposal or a re-opening of an old one -- prohibits subsequent voters from proposing even minor corrections to the original version. Thus,  the prescript in the entry form in such cases states categorically:
            The first vote was [del].
Please decide between the original entry and the delete, according to GL3!

As I have repeatedly observed in the past discussions of this formulation, everything hinges on the CONDITIONAL intoducing the GL 3 §2 rule:
"IF the entry is incorrect AND the first voting is [del], ...".

What should the subsequent voter do. if he is convinced that the first voter's delete-vote was unjustified, because the original version was basically correct and contained only a minor error, e.g. punctuation or typo that could have been easily corrected. Until we give a clear answer to this question, it will come up again and again and continue to poison the atmosphere in our community.

I once made a suggestion, -- based on your own responses in previous threads  for complementing GL 3 §2; I suggest it anew to illustrate the kind of clarification I believe we need to resolve this ever-recurring debacle
"If the entry is incorrect and the first voting is [del], confirm the [del] vote. However, such a [del] vote
cast by a first voter is counts as correct and binding only if no previous posting (vote or
comment) contained an improved version of the entry that is correct; furthermore, it does not
prohibit subsequent voters from proposing minor corrections of errors in spelling or punctuation or
               proposing additions in square brackets-."

The only alternative would be to prescribe categorically:

"If the first voter has voted  for delete, whether justly or not, vote for delete, unless you believe
the unchanged original is correct. You have no right to propose new corrections however minor."

Was haltet ihr von folgendem Zusatz für Regel 3 ("Always confirm the first correct posting")?

A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained a correct version of the entry and the entry can't be corrected just by adding or changing information in square brackets or by correcting a simple spelling or punctuation error.

GL 3 verhalten.
http://users.dict.cc/Wenz/contributions/votes-outvoted/
http://contribute.dict.cc/?action=show-history&id=1311286

--- surgery [UK] [of an MP, city councillor, lawyer etc.] --

http://contribute.dict.cc/?action=show-history&id=1327769

The original version -- made by an inexperienced Dict.cc-ler, Tracy 52 -- was formally and semantically incorrect as it stood -- clearly no one gasped the author's intentions -- and thus it was justly deleted by the experienced voters, Catesse and Wenz..

Tracy52 immediately attempted to undelete and assigned the subject "pol."; but in this form the entry was still semantically incorrect, because the term "surgery", in such an unusual meaning, desperately needed a bracketed disambiguating definition. Thus, it was once again deleted -- correctly according to GL 3, §2

Meanwhile, however, ddr, an expeienced disambiguator, had given the matter deeper consideration and had come to understand what Tracy52 had actually intended as expressed in her commentary. Thus, ddr formulated an appropriate disambiguation and undeleted. In this new, improved version, the entry was now formally and semantically correct and was quickly verified. Without Tracy's persistence -- helpless as it was -- and ddr's patient willingness to correct the entry by disambiguating the meaning intended, a valuable, if rather exotic entry would have been lost.

Some among us would say; good riddance! such improvement attempts are not worth the effort, and they only encourage slovenliness on the part of the people who make such formally and semantically incorrect entries. Better to punish them with a delete.
Others among us have argued that saving valuable content is more important than punishing delinquant contributors, and thus we are willing to make a reasonable effort to improve salvageable entries, if -- when we grasp the author's intentions -- we believe them to be useful.

As long as Dict.cc remains a crowd-sourced, open dictionary with outvotes counting against one's voting status, we need to encourage voters to tackle difficult entries rather than merely skip them. GL 3 §2 does this by privileging delete-votes cast by the first voter by exempting him from getting an outvote. But it is equally necessary to define clearly, when a delete vote is justified and binding and when it is unjustified and can be overridden. That is the point of Paul's new proposal.

It is true that in many cases of flawed entries, the clearest and simplest solution would be to delete the original and make a new, improved entry, at least if more serious corrections are needed than simply improving spelling and punctuation or changing the word-class. Adding bracketed information such as disambiguating definitions can easily complicate the verification process.

Thus, voters interested in "saving" flawed entries, would be more willing to comply with the Delete-Rule in GL 3, if Paul could make it easier for Delete-voters, willing to suggest an improved version in place of the deleted one, to click on a corresponding notification to ensure that valuable information is not lost, when the delete is accepted. Following Wenz, this notice might take the following form:

"This entry is incorrect as it stands and should thus be deleted (unless only minor changes  of
spelling, punctuation, word-class or subject are called for) , but the potentially valuable information
it contains can be saved by making a new, corrected entry.; see ???"

In the event that the delete voter himself proposes such a new, corrected entry, he could then
replace the "???" with the URL of the new entry.

Such an easy to use and prominent notification would, as ddr observes in #847002, be more effective  than burying the information in an individual comment that many voters will overlook.

Ja? Nein? Weiß nicht? Anderer Textvorschlag?

A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained a correct version of the entry and the entry can't be corrected just by adding or changing information in square brackets or by correcting simple spelling, punctuation and/or formatting errors.
