Definitely a concept for German submarines of WWII.  As I understand it, a short radio transmission to advertise location of a target convoy to other German submarines in the area so that they could join the attack.  So a location radio beacon.
Not sure why my translation was deleted.  Who has a better?

For me, the problem was that the "-zeichen" is the signal that is sent, while "beacon" is the instrument that sends the signal. That was the reason I revoked my vote. I spent quite a lot of time on this, but I could not find a handy way to resolve the problem. I hoped that somebody else would be knowledgeable enough to fix it. Both terms certainly exist and should be in dict, but not in the same entry.

A Peilzeichen is a radio transmission sent from a vessel so that someone else can locate it by triangulation. For this triangulation to work, the transmission has to have a certain length and and be repeated at regular intervals. The Peilzeichen generally is not given as speech, but rather as a distinctive noise, like the one produced by holding down a transmit button. At the link, see the entry g. under 6. Schritte einer Seenotfallmeldung.

I think "location" or "locating" would be a good word to have in the entry ("locating radio transmission," for example). I agree with Catesse that "beacon" is misleading because it suggests a fixed and often land-based radio transmitter. Peilzeichen are sent by something that can move.

I found this on the page suggested by asf.  It seems to bear out.  See this entry:
Google: "radio beacon signal" german submarines

I am going to try this again.  Thanks, all!
