"Their" in such a circumstance is not "correct" either grammatically or logically. But what the heck! It is very widely used, and a handy way to avoid having to think about reconstructing a sentence so that you do not need to use it.
It was so easy at one time.  #857946

I was taught in school that the male pronoun could include females among unknown people.
No his/her to fret about.  And certainly not "their".

Maybe we should say "everytwo" instead of "everyone", if there is always an opposite male and female opinion? (Just kidding.)

4; Jim. Yes, that was the case. In theory, it could have been stipulated that "she" also includes any males. In any case, I think it is a matter of recognising that women also play a role these days. After all, it is only relatively recently that women got the vote as well. Language can influence the way we think.

Whether all this "politically correct" language has actually made a difference and changed mindsets it rather debatable.

For a world-wide timeline see:
A few examples: New Zealand 1893; South Australia 1895; Western Australia 1899; Australia 1902; Norway 1907; Canada 1917; UK 1918 (at 30), 1928 (at 21); Austria 1918; Germany 1918; Poland 1918; USA 1920; Spain 1931; France 1944 (!?); Italy 1945; Japan 1945; Argentina 1947; India 1950; Greece 1952; Iran 1963; Switzerland 1971 - after those bastions of democracy such as Iran, the Congo, Sudan, Uganda, Vietnam, Yemen et al.
Sweden was an anomaly; women with an independent income could vote in municipal elections from1862, but did not get full voting rights until 1921, apparently.
