Frage: | fix und fertige arbeit | |
this expression appears in an industrial architecture text and obviously has nothing to do with being very tired or any synonym of that state. previously I have used 'ready made', but while products can be ready made, the words do not seem applicable to work or any other process. any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated! |

*done in exhausted. (*Typically: be ~; get ~.) I'm really done in! I think I'll go to bed. After all that lifting, Gerald was done in and breathing hard. See also: done |

In legal, contract and advertising language, it stands for "all-inclusive," meaning that there are no extra items to buy and no additional work is needed. |

Presumably what crossed the author's mind was stuff like Fertigteilbauweise etc. The switch to fix und fertig stems from a quest for originality through ambiguity. As such, fix und fertig may jolly well mean ready made. Not so as an idiom. Nevertheless the author has plumped for introducing fix und fertig in its unidiomatic, basic sense. Startling the reader may enliven an otherwise sleep-inducing text. Not the kind of stratagem good writers would resort to: their lines are never soporific! |

Thanks MichaelK and Proteus for your helpful (and correct register) comments. Proteus: who taught you to say jolly well? Nobody has said that for about 60 years! |

1. Nobody in their right mind would regard Theresa May (or any other Conservative politician) as an appropriate English language style/grammar/usage guru (or for that matter want to keep company with them) 2. jolly well and very well are by no means interchangeable: you could not use very well instead of jolly well in the Independent quote, and 'may jolly well mean' (as you had it) is unidiomatic and in fact bad English: should be may (very) well mean, i.e. may quite possibly mean |

(1) My use of jolly well results from growing up in a multilingual family, partly going to school in the UK and from having lived and worked in London for about fifty years. Why on earth should the current PM be a guru of mine? (2) Quote: "I—I—I say, you fellows," stammered Bunter. "I—I fancy I've got it right, whatever Smithy says. S.P. jolly well means starting price, I know that. If W.II. doesn't mean the two o'clock, it means the second race, see—it might mean that just as well. https://www.google.co.uk/#q=%22jolly+well+means%22+%22%22+%22%22+si... Were you absent when adverbs were taught in school? First and foremost they are just that, modifiers of verbs, hence their name. https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/adverb |

Agree with simonchik. Usage of "jolly well" in Proteus' 13:30 post sounds awkward. It does not fit the context in which it was said. |

Proteus (let's cut out the sarcastic dearest) if you are seriously saying that jolly well and very well are synonymous and interchangeable then you need some English lessons. Try putting very well into Bunter's or May's sentence and see what you get. And no, I wasn't absent, I know a lot about adverbs, more it seems than you do |

4; simon, just for your information - this is an ongoing argument, sorry discussion. Proteus- admitted that his/her native language is neither English nor German, yet he/she demands to be right in all cases - in both languages - and won't accept native speakers' polite corrections. Hey ho. |
Chat: | timfefe, dearest: What are your credentials? Given your lack of education I do not think I can take any advice from you | #858614 |
Why don't you start by teaching yourself better English? Australia is not the cradle of English, you know. Plenty of books and courses for 'native speakers'. What about trying to lose your Australian accent? |
