Suppose that I would like to switch (the locations of) /swap the table and the sofa.  

Ich möchte den Tisch und die Sofa tauschen? umtauschen? herumtauschen? oder noch was anderes? Muss man noch "the locations" dazufügen?

If it's obvious you do not need    miteinander

ok, to be more specific:  Suppose that the table stands in the southeast corner of the room and the sofa sits in the southwest corner.  (No, I cannot explain why the table stands but the sofa sits.  The sofa could stand without changing the meaning, but one would usually say that the table stands.)  Now back to the matter at hand.  I want to move the sofa to the southeast corner and the table to the southwest corner.  Assuming that one could actually see the room, it would make sense to say that I wanted to switch the sofa and the table.  

(a) Ich moechte die Plaetze des Tischs und der Sofa austauschen?  
(b) Ich moechte die Sofa and den Tisch austauschen?
(c) Ich moechte den Tisch und der Sofa umstellen?

Falls ich "umstellen" benutze, waere es nicht auch moeglich dass ich die beiden nur etwas verschieben wollte?

So, first things first: it's das Sofa, neutral.
(a) would be correct and can't be misunderstood, but sounds a bit rough.
(b) would be my personal choice, but could be misunderstood for getting a new table and sofa
(c) only implies that these objects are moved, not that they swap positions, as you suggested

a) and b)  I would understand it that you want to buy new ones. c) is my preferred option

I'd go for "Möbel umstellen".

going back to tim's original question.
Verrücken - move something, can also be just a little bit
etw. in eine Ecke/dort drüben/mehr zur Seite/etc. etc (Ortsangabe) rücken - move sth. to another place (into the corner etc.)
bewegen - I wouldn't use it for inanimate objects
verschieben - to move sth. from its original place.

Aber im Allgemeinen sagen wir wohl "ich habe den Tisch und das Sofa umgestellt". Dann kommt meistens eh die Frage kommen: Wie denn? Wohin denn? oder so. Und dann gibt man genaue Auskunft.

Anordnung (arrangement) kann es nur bei zwei oder mehr Dingen geben, und eine Anordnung kann man nur insgesamt ändern. Der genaue Standort eines Tisches oder Sofas innerhalb der Anordnung der Einrichtungsgegenstände ist sein "Platz".
