Frage: | captain first class | |

The title "captain" has a wide variety of meanings in English. A captain in the army. A captain in the navy (a much higher rank than in the army). The captain of a football team. The captain of a fire brigade unit. The captain (chief pilot) of an aircraft. And so on. A "first class captain" would mean simply a very good captain. No worries. But a "captain, first class"? It does not make much sense to me. Context needed. |

This captain belongs to military intelligence. |

I found this: https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=1PGZBgAAQBAJ&pg=PA25&lp... But if Catesse hasn't heard of it, given her extensive knowledge of military history, it's probably not a well known rank. |
Antwort: | Napoleon | #870741 |
Ah, if it was a rank in Napoleon's army, it is no wonder I had never heard of it. I am no expert on the French army in the eighteenth century. Well outside my field in both time and place. And that applies even more to fantasy and fiction. Do you really need to translate it, or just to understand it? My inventiveness in German does not extend that far. |

My thanks to all and sundry :-) It's just Fantasy, I guess. I got my thinking apparatus working and invented something that will do. |
