Frage:
Genaue Übersetzung ins Englische
von elamanola (UN), Last modified: 2017-07-26, 18:11  like dislike  Spam?
What does "gebende" mean?
in this sentence:
what I found in the dictionary is: "giver " and doesn't make sense.
thank you!

I think the meaning is that the "Sprachphilosophie" pretends to be "bilderfeindlich". It wants to project the image of being "bilderfeindlich".

Also vielleicht: "die sich bilderfeindlich gebende Sprachphilosophie" = "the linguistic philosophy being 'bilderfeindlich'" oder einfach "the 'bilderfeindlich' linguistic philosophy"

"Gebend" heißt ja, dass sie so wirken will, s.a. curiositys Kommentar. Mein Vorschlag:

.....how much/to what extent linguistic philosophy where imagery is seen not to be tolerated was pushed by a fear of visual representation.

this is the original text:

Der amerikanische Initiator des ‘pictorial turn', W. J. Thomas Mitchell, schließt mit seinem Buch “What Do Pictures Want? The Lives and Loves of Images" an seine Picture Theory an, die als Abkehr vom ‘linguistic turn' mit dem Nachweis begann,  wie sehr die sich bilderfeindlich gebende Sprachphilosophie von einer Angst vor visueller Repräsentation getrieben wurde.

and this is my translation (if you have any suggestions to make this more accurate please let me know):

The American initiator of the pictorial turn, W. J. T. Mitchell with his book "What Do Pictures Want?: The Lives and Loves of Images conclude to his Picture Theory, the rejection of the "linguistic turn" began with the proof of how much Philosophy of Language was driven by visual representation's anxiety.

Nicht "geben" sondern "sich geben"  #874932

Hi elamola,

It's as dhk said. Here's an excerpt from a 2006 interview with W.J.T. Mitchell:

Mitchell: "I think that many of the modernist master-narratives (say of Marxism, psychoanalysis, or of modern art and philosophy) were iconoclastic in very fundamental ways. They tended to treat images as the object of destructive critique, of critical operations that would dispel their power, eliminate them from consciousness, and smash them once and for all. Ideology critique, for instance, was consistently portrayed as a practice of emancipation from a false consciousness depicted as a repertoire of seductive and false images. Ditto for psychoanalysis and its relation to imagination and fantasy. The history of philosophy, from Plato's banishment of the artist to Richard Rorty's "linguistic turn," resolutely set its face against the image. As Wittgenstein put it, "a picture held us captive, and we could not get outside of it." Heidegger thought that modernity had trapped humanity in an "age of the world picture," and that philosophy (or poetry) might find a way out of it."

In short, philosophy expressed in spoken or written words (4;elamanola: not "Philosophy of Language") has always affected (sich gegeben) some degree of iconoclasm. (My 'affected' from 'to affect' defined as 'pretend to have or feel something.')
