Frage: | Downsize / trade down (houses) | |
The children had left home; the garden was becoming a problem. What was the point of the large rambling family house? Yes, the time had come to downsize (trade down). How to express this? Thanks in advance. M |

in German? Sie sind in ein kleineres Haus gezogen. |

Thank you ... easier than I'd thought! M |

NB the dict entry is for companies, not houses. I don't think sich einschränken works either. Many (older) people downsize to free up some capital, it is a voluntary decision and not connected to any external influence. |

Thanks again. It does seem more common in GB than in D for older people to 'downsize' and thus make life easier and more affordable in retirement. M |

Agree that sich einschränken doesn't really work here. The context is the "large, rambling family house," so kleineres Haus or something similar indicating a smaller residence works well. As usual, the poster "Proteus" picked a word, then looked for anything that would substantiate his choice. Didn't work in this case--the links at 15:52 show that sich einschränken is much too general. |
Antwort: | sich verkleinern | #875800 |
I concur. "sich einschränken" refers to the money you have to spend, not to the size of your house. On the other hand, "sich verkleinern" does work for private individuals, cf. Google: "werden uns verkleinern und" |

thanks for that info Proofreader. Well, 185 g-hits and mostly forums. But it's good to know that it is entering the language. |
